It's been a great year for
Rinicom - Southampton's answer to uber-inventor "Q" in the
James Bond films. The company, based at Southampton Science Park, was formed
less than a year ago but its hi-tech inventions are already creating a
storm - with clients from all over the world placing large orders.
One of their main products is a wireless
camera designed to be hidden in a briefcase or coat. The tiny video camera
comes with a transmitter disguised as a mobile phone. It's currently used
for surveillance operations by anti-drug and anti-terrorist authorities -
and demand is high.
Rinicom have also created more
down-to-earth products like RiniLink - a wireless modem, which can be used
to create a temporary mobile phone network. It is ideal for events like
agricultural shows in places that normally have no signal. RiniLink is
also used by large companies like Vodaphone to expand their coverage into
remote villages without the need for cabling.
Perhaps their most widely used product is a
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) - this allows people to access email
and the internet from laptops or PDAs without having to "plug
in" to a network. But the unique feature of Rinicom's WLAN is that it
covers a range of up to 3km - whilst their competitors only have a range
of about 50 metres.
This means that a whole village could
access the internet through a single Rinicom unit.
Dr Garik Markarian, CEO of Rinicom said:
"We aim to employ existing technologies and adapt them to new uses.
Rinicom's products are all based on wireless technology but they perform a
wide variety of functions. We use our key skills to address many different
markets."
"Garik Markarian has done a brilliant
job in getting Rinicom up and running so successfully. This is typical of
the "can-do" attitude of many of Southampton Science Park's
resident companies." commented Dr Don Fox, Chief
Executive.
