The optical industry,
MEMS manufacturers and hip replacement specialists are among those set to
benefit from the hi-tech precision expertise of TaiCaan Technologies Ltd,
a new occupier at the Science Park.
A spin-off company from the
University of Southampton TaiCaan makes surface profilers which allow high
precision measurement and analysis of 3D surface topography. TaiCaan's
Christian Maul says: "The profiler is not dissimilar to a microscope
but instead of giving you a picture of the object we scan the surface and
produce 3D data with micrometer accuracy. This enables you to perform
measurements of the surface and evaluate the form and surface
roughness."
Based on 15 years
experience in surface metrology, the company was founded in 2001 by its
director, Professor John. W. McBride, with the help of a DTI Smart award.
There are now four employees and the company is aiming to expand over the
next few years, with companies in Australia and the Far East interested in
its product range.
