Labs at Science Park

Biologists at Ferring's
research centre at Southampton Science Park are reaping the benefits
of working in new state-of-the-art labs.
The development of the new facilities, which was achieved without
any increase in overall budget and involving the research team
throughout the process, has brought all 24 biologists together. Until
recently the team worked in two different buildings and in chemistry
labs adapted for biology research. This led to duplication of
equipment and barriers to communication.
Dr Chris Yea, Head of Biology, emphasised the benefits which have
already become clear. 'It has certainly helped motivationally, as
people now work more closely together on technically similar
processes, as well as driving more efficient use of equipment and
resource. It has also given me much easier access to my team and them
to me, and improved interaction at all levels.'
The whole feel of the place is light and open, with a lot of use of
glass to make all the work as visible and transparent as possible.
This is deliberately creating an atmosphere of a close knit team,
because as Ferring's Managing Director Robert Haigh says: 'our
uniqueness is that we are a small family group of people.'
