The first shipping spool
for optical fibre was designed twenty five years ago. With a holding
capacity of 30km, it went on to become the industry standard, used
globally. That is until now!
Based on the proportions
of the original spool, the Eco-Spool has been designed at Fibercore
for the specialist optical industry. Holding 12.5km of fibre and
without losing any essential functionality, the new spool design
will save valuable storage space and reduce shipping and transit
costs.
Prototype testing by
customers over three years has proved its functionality to be even
better than the old model. This low-tech solution will enable a
greater number of spools to be stored, doubling capacity overnight
with no additional expense on equipment changes. There is even the
possibility of economical re-use within the EU, bringing more
financial and environmental savings.
Fibercore's annual
environmental savings will exceed: 100m3 foam filler (now entirely
replaced with recycled packaging) 2000m3 of cardboard and enough
plastic to make a 2km-long drain-pipe. When multiplied through the
fibre-optic industry the savings to companies and the environment
alike will be outstanding.
Philip Moody,
Environmental Services for Fibercore says "We are proud to be at the
forefront of the redesign of the industry standard and hope that our
example will show other small companies that innovation need not be
either expensive nor high-tech. Furthermore, through working with
other companies including our competitors, we can reduce the
environmental impact of an entire industry!"
