The
Royal Society of Chemistry has announced the winners of its
Encouraging Innovation Awards for 2004. These prestigious prizes
recognise the importance of innovation to the future of the chemical
science industry in the UK.
The Merck team, led by Dr Julian
Vaughan-Spickers, won its Teamwork in Innovation prize in
recognition of its successful collaboration with Queen's
University Belfast concerning the development and commercialisation
of ionic liquids in the chemical industry. Ionic liquids are an
exciting new group of materials that have the potential to be more
environmentally friendly, safer and more efficient than traditional
solvents.
By being swift to recognise the
potential for ionic liquids, Merck is now the front runner in their
development, customisation, production and supply.
