Lime Tree Walk is one of Southampton Science Park's most
beautiful features. The parallel rows of trees were planted around 1900
and some had recently reached 70 feet tall. They form an avenue leading to
Chilworth Manor from the south, but no road appears to have run between
the trees.
For many years, Lime Tree Walk has looked after itself,
but the combined effects of weather, disease and old age meant that a
little help was needed. In conjunction with specialist tree surgeons, DC
Knight and Son (tel 01256 461676) we have drawn up a plan to protect the
healthy trees and replace the ones lost to disease and storms, thus
recovering the uniformity of the avenue.
The purpose of the recent work was to make the trees
safe by crown reduction, dead wood removal, ivy stripping and sucker
removal. We have also planted grass under the reduced canopy so the area
can be used for walking and relaxing - the dappled shade will be
especially useful on hot summer days.
In the next part of the programme, it is our intention
to grind out the stumps of dead trees and replant the gaps with
substantial new limes - to restore Lime Tree Walk to its full glory.
