The past few months have seen a hive of
activity in Chilworth Conservation Area. With the help of various
volunteers from the community and the University, many projects have been
carried out.
- Various ponds have been surveyed and a
population of Palmate newts found. Advice will be sought from English
Nature in order to improve their habitat.
- Tree safety work has been
completed to remove potentially hazardous branches.
- Several bridges
have been constructed to help people cross the woodland watercourses.
- Woodpiles have been created to encourage fungi and invertebrates.
And even the lizards are being looked
after: They've been seen basking on a pile of railway sleepers so the
sleepers will be moved away from the encroaching nettles and into an even
better position for catching the sun.
