High tech facilities
available in Hampshire will be enhanced following Southampton Science Park's
purchase of 6 acres of land from Hampshire County Council. The land has
planning permission for the construction of 10,000 square metres of
additional accommodation for science and technology based industries.
This development will enable further
clusters of technological expertise to be formed at the Science Park,
which already enjoys an international reputation as a home to world-class
technology businesses as well as acting as a 'seedbed' for emerging
businesses in science and technology. Local and regional businesses are
also likely to benefit considerably from the expansion.
This development reinforces Southampton Science Park's
position as the leading science park in the South of England. We are
pleased to offer new opportunities for companies to enjoy the Science Park's
unique benefits of excellent communications,
a tranquil setting and an exciting, high tech environment. The emphasis
will be on high quality, low-impact buildings - ideal for those start-up
companies from our incubators that develop into successful enterprises.
But there will also be self-build options for more established
companies," said park chief executive, Dr Don Fox.
The existing 30-acre Science Park is
already home to international businesses such as Merck and is also at the
centre of the Southampton Enterprise Hub, set up by the South East England
Development Agency.
The development site, which is surrounded
by woodland, is accessed through the existing Science Park. The initiation
of the development will also trigger improvements to the main Science Park
road access to the A27.
Councillor Ken Thornber, Leader of
Hampshire County Council, said: "I am delighted that by working with
the University of Southampton and Southampton Science Park Ltd, we have been
able to offer the opportunity to expand the research and development
facilities in Hampshire which will further strengthen the economy of the
County".
